Green Award certifies ships that are extra clean and extra safe.

The certification is awarded by Green Award Foundation, an independent foundation, established 1994 on the initiative of the Rotterdam Municipal Port Management and the Dutch Ministry of Transport. Since 1 January 2000 Green Award is completely independent.

Ships with a Green Award certificate reap various financial and non-financial benefits.

The Environmental Ship Index (ESI), has been integrated into the new Green Award requirements and becomes compulsory for Green Award certificate holders upon implementation of the new requirements.
