Workshop Social Aspects of Task Democracy
Workshop about task democracy during the annual BSS congress Task democracy is a novel social and political concept for acceleration of urgent sustainability transitions, for climate change mitigation, regenerative agriculture, circular economy, minority rights, citizenship, global justice, etc. At its core the concept is about task division and society wide project coordination between science, citizens, government, businesses and non-profits, for which adequate platforms are still lacking. This workshop provides you with a brief introduction, a review of psychological, sociological and educational aspects, and a hands-on roleplay simulation. In the simulation we split into five groups of task group representatives. We’ll test a task democratic decision-making procedure and observe sense of safety, solidarity, justice and collective change leadership. In plenary evaluation we consider benefits, costs and risks, and we explore how you can use the task democratic method in your career as a change maker.
Locatie: Euroborg, Groningen. Aanvang: 11:20.

Locatie: IVN, Amsterdam. Aanvang: 11:00.

Unifying sustainability and democracy: building a network of transition coordination platforms
Presentatie op het Economy for the Common Good congres 2026 Both the global sustainability movement and democracy movements everywhere are making too little progress or experience backsliding. Consequently, in both movements signs of anxiety and stress are visible. Problem analysis in both movements, however, mainly remains within their respective paradigms, keeping combined development pathways out of sight. Meanwhile the polycrisis is deepening and becoming existential to mankind. The objective of this contribution is to explore an option for breaking this gridlock and for unification of sustainability and democracy. We argue that sustainability needs radical innovation of the political system, and that politics needs the urgency of sustainability to reunite society.

Circular economy by task-democracy: Exploratory questions as a startup tool for transformative action and transdisciplinary research
Paper presentation at the New Business Models 2026 congress This paper presents a tool for visionary initiators of task-democratic circular economy collaboration. It intends to help in gathering initial data and guides through first steps. Circular economy is of critical importance to the preservation of our biosphere, our natural resources and our civilisation, but progress is way off track and a radical acceleration is needed. In previous work we presented the task-democracy model as a pathway to such acceleration. The model outlines societal coordination between complementary task groups, integration in public administration, and establishment of task-democratic coordination platforms on any level. We summarise the model, its relevance in current local, national and global contexts, and practical barriers to experiments and implementations. Next, we focus on the first mover: the influential visionary person who wants to initiate CE-collaboration for a given product group in a given geographical domain, using the task democracy model. Getting started has appeared to be complex and the model implementation method has so far offered only limited guidance. We therefore set out to develop a better tool. It takes the shape of a generic questionnaire template, designed for use in person-to-person dialogue and for reproducibility and proliferation. The questions focus on area, product and actor identification, transition urgencies and options, benefits and risks of task division, and task group responses. The set may be used by SBM-researchers and by platform initiators. During 2026 we invite opinion leaders of five transition task groups (science, citizens, government, businesses, non-profits) on multiple territorial scales to reflect on this.
