Nuclear reactors in the EU are running on uranium that has been extracted from uranium mines in Canada, Kazakhstan, Australia and Africa. While the extraction of coal for coal-fired power plants receives a lot of public and political attention, the upstream part of the nuclear cycle is seldom discussed. However, environmental impacts are severe and the pollution covers large areas. If these impacts are not mitigated properly, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity and detrimental effects on human health are the consequence.

During a two hour session, Anthony Lyamunda (Tanzania), Mgr. Sébastien Mongo Behon (Cameroon) and Mariam Traore (Mali) will talk about their work and the challenges they face on a daily basis – after a short introduction by the project coordinator Ulrike Lerche (WISE). Fleur Scheele, researcher at the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations, SOMO, will present the findings from her research on mitigation of environmental impacts of uranium mining in Namibia, South Africa, and the Central African Republic. After the presentations, there will be room for questions and debate.
