Various water challenges related to urban water management and governance already affect the inhabitants of European cities. How will European cities respond to these challenges? Which cities are willing to take the next steps in safeguarding their water provision? What can European cities learn from each other?

In February 2016, mayors from various European cities will gather in Leeuwarden to put water higher on the urban agenda. They will hear about and discuss the following questions:

- How can cities support the role of (waste) water in a circular economy?

- How can cities prepare for the challenges ahead?

- How can they work together and learn from each other?

- How can innovative solutions be applied throughout cities in Europe?

- How can Horizon2020 and the European Regional Development Fund (ESIF) best support these developments?

- What is the link between water and the Urban Agenda?

The event “Mayors & Water” on 11 February 2016 will aim to create momentum around these questions, inspired by the 2008 climate and energy package which was adopted and launched by the Covenant of Mayors that endorsed and supports the efforts deployed by local authorities in the implementation of sustainable energy policies. Signatory cities of “Mayors Adapt” already take the next steps in urban climate adaptation measures of which water is a highly important, if not the most important, factor.
